Visitors have been coming to Hyvinkää for rest and relaxation already since the 1800-s. During that times Hyvinkää’s Sanatorium was well known for its healing treatments, calming nature and crystal clear air.
The Sveitsi area of Hyvinkää dates back to 1885, when it was first mentioned in the travel guides. However, the reason why the area was named “Sveitsi”, meaning “Switzerland”, remains a mystery. According to one of the stories, a German family of the same name has kept an inn in the area. Another story tells that the patients of the sanatorium compared local air and nature with the one of the Swiss Alps.
The Sveitsinharju ridge is a part of the Salpausselkä, which was shaped during the Ice Age. Sveitsi kettle, a shallow waters formed by the glacier, has been a part of the recreational area already from the 1870-s. The Sveitsi nature area stretches for 200 hectares, half of which is declared as a nature reserve. The area is abundant of forest berries, mushrooms, and has multiple nature trails, that in winter are transformed into lighted cross-country skiing tracks.
Winter sports have been a significant part of Sveitsi for decades: the ski jumping facility has been built in the beguinning of the 20th century, the ski lift has been added to the slope in 1960-s and the first curling rink was built in 1970-s.
